I think there is a lot of truth to the cliché “it all starts with a sketch” but truth be told a lot of work and ideating goes into the design before the pencil ever touches paper. The technical side begins with zoning research, learning what restrictions your lot has, survey reviews and anything else that may dictate the size, shape and location of the home. The artistic side, and sometimes most inspiring point of the design, begins with the site visit.
We walk around the lot to find the best views, see where the sun rises and sets and how the home can respond to the land around it. You may have a lovely floor plan in office, but a truly inspired design communicates with the landscape. It draws you in with rhythm and flow. As we know now, even a chat bot can draw up a floor plan. But can it make decision based on the human experience? Choosing to angle the out the primary suite to the left to capture views of your favorite garden. Wrapping the deck around the right to follow the sun as you enjoy your day.
During the design process we will make thousands of small decisions, and they are never at random. The first ones lay the foundation so to speak, and they are almost always built upon those early moments.
